Fleet size
Power units (trucks and tractors) reported on the MCS-150, all 4,522,156 carriers on file.
Top cargo types
Active carriers declaring each cargo type. A carrier can declare several, so these do not add up to the total. FMCSA records building materials and construction identically, so they are shown as one.
About this data
Figures come from the FMCSA Company Census, published by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which DOT Lookup downloads nightly. “Active” means FMCSA lists the carrier’s registration as active; operating authority is a separate status, and the two do not always agree.
Filing changes are counted from our own archive, which began on 14 September 2026. FMCSA publishes no history, so changes before that date cannot be recovered.
